Obituary

David J. Learn (March 18,1959)

Passed away at the St. Catharines Hospital on September 27, 2019 at the age of 60. David was a true fighter and demonstrated this right to the end. David was a loving, caring, and beyond generous person to those who knew him and always brought together people important in his life.

David spent his younger years growing up in Fonthill and attended Elementary School and E.L. Crossley Secondary School in Fonthill. David was a brilliant businessman, whose focus was international finance. David was the only undergraduate recipient of the Governor General Chancellor Award at Brock University where he studied Finance. David then went on to obtain his MBA in International Finance at the University of Chicago. David worked and lived in London England, Manhattan New York, and Zurich Switzerland for the Union Bank of Switzerland. The last several years of his life David retired from the busy life and worked on his own investments which took him to Toronto and finally St. Catharine's.

David loved travel, children, viticulture and his friends and family. David was particularly close to his mother Frances Alice Buchwitz (nee Wales). David is also predeceased by his father John M. Learn. David was very much loved and survived by his family and many dear friends. Private family viewing has taken place at James Pedlar Funeral Home Fonthill. As per David's wishes cremation took place. David's ashes will be laid to rest over his mother's grave at Fonthill Cemetery in mid November. There will be a Celebration of David's Life at that time. Details to follow. Please contact the family early November at suelearn@gmail.com.

Donations can be made in David's name to Unicef. A particular thank you to the St. Catharine's ER and ICU Physicians and Nursing Staff from the family.

I am truly saddened to hear the news of David's passing. We grew up as best friends in Fonthill. David and I spent countless hours together riding our bikes, playing pool, daring each other to do stupid things and just enjoying that care free life of boys. In 1974 our family moved from the area and we lost touch. I often wondered where life had taken David, hoping we would reconnect one day.
My sincere condolences to all family members.
Rest in peace David.

I will always remember how important it was to David to bring people together of different ages and walks of life. And how so often he used humour to make friends and loved ones feel even closer, yet had a generous and serious heart when he felt it important to help those less fortunate or in need. David was such a gracious host, and I am grateful for the countless times he made me and so many others feel welcome in his home. With love and many fond memories, Philip Curtis.
