Obituary

Thomas, Howard Bertram Dr. MD
Passed away peacefully at the Welland Hospital on Thursday December 5, 2019 in his 89th year. Beloved husband of the late Jacqueline (nee Young 2008). Dear and loving father of Derek Thomas (Sandra) and Lesley Currivan (Andrew). Cherished grandfather of Spencer, Summer, Hunter, Cian, Aiden and great-grandfather to Peyton and Dallas. Dearly missed by his sister Jocelyn Sourant as well as his nieces and nephews in Tilbury, Ontario and Atlanta, Georgia.

After being born in Toronto, Howie spent his school age years in Tilbury. He always had a soft spot in his heart for the small town he was raised in, often calling it “the capital of south western Ontario”. His undergraduate years were in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania where he received his degree from Westminster College. He was a member of the social fraternity, Sigma Phi Epsilon.

After graduation he headed to Montreal where he graduated with a medical degree. He went on to intern at Royal Victoria Hospital, & follow up with a residency in Ophthalmology. During those years he met an R.N, Jackie Young. They were married in 1963 and settled in Fonthill, Ontario. Howie had an ophthalmology practice in Welland for 38 years, where he was much loved by staff & patients, alike.

A special thank you to Lookout Ridge staff and residents for playing a very special part in the later years of his life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Make A Wish Foundation.
In keeping with Howie’s wishes cremation has taken place. There will be no service at this time.

Sandra and I wish to offer our belated sympathies to The Thomas family. Howard, or Howie as he was affectionately referred to, had a rather wry sense of humour, a love for “Rickie” (his dog) and a gentle, warm nature to those who finally were able to understand him.
We moved into Victory Garden condos in 2008 and Howie followed thereafter. He immediately became a welcome part of the community. Always a kidder and jokester, he loved to spew single line controversy just to see how you would react. He was a friend to us every day with words of good will.
He was proud of how he had trained Rickie to stand guard in the upper window while waiting for his “master” to come home ... of course we all recognized this was a dog thing and not training, but Howie always paused and waited for the those shrill barks welcoming him back.
We have occasionally thought of him and this morning he popped into our conversation. Upon checking to see if he was still at the Home we discovered his obit.
His gift to us was his presence and friendship which we will remember forever and for which we say “Thank You”.

Dr. Thomas' Family: Please accept my deepest heartfelt condolences of the passing of your beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather. Dr. Thomas was my eye doctor all of my life, until he retired. He was such a gentle man. I had the opportunity to become reacquainted with him again while I worked at Lookout. I would see and greet him almost daily and I recall him asking me to put his poppy on for him for the Remembrance Day service. Cherish your wonderful memories.

Dr. Howard Thomas will long be fondly remembered as an exemplary physician to his patients and friends. His expertise in his field of ophthalmology made him an exceptionally busy man which he handled with great professionalism. His practice in the Niagara area is legendary and he did much to improve the lives of so many people.
We send our sincere condolences to his family as they deal with his passing.
