After retirement he taught English as a Second Language in the Czech Republic and Spain.
He married Elizabeth Addison in 1962 and they had three sons, Andrew, Richard and Allan and were married for 42 years. After the breakup of this marriage, John became the partner of Diane Sauder of Welland, and they were together for 14 years.

He was a well-known soccer referee, enjoyed badminton and he and Diane together enjoyed dancing, Meals on Wheels volunteering, and spending time with family.
