Obituary

Nell Vermeer

God in His infinite wisdom has taken home his servant, Nell Vermeer. Mom’s earthly journey was filled with love, life, and laughter, deep sorrows and trials. Through it all, she rejoiced in the love and faithfulness of her Saviour Jesus Christ. Surrounded by her family, Nell passed away at the Welland General Hospital on Saturday, May 25, 2019 at the age of 91. The moment God took mom to himself; he sent an enormous double rainbow. What a promise to all of us!

Beloved mom to Margaret and Bert, Sid and Patti, Karin, Cathy, Gerry and Cynthia, Lorraine and Bret, and special aunt to Ger and Tineke. Predeceased by her husband, Gerrit Vermeer, and her daughter Irene. Deeply loved Oma of Mark and Ronda, Andrea and David, Ryan and Nattalie, Reuben and Jennifer, Jessica and Michael, Alison and Brian, Ginelle and Casey, Karina and Brian, Stephanie and Kyle, Gerrit and Kaitlyn, Shannon and Deejay, Andre and Kimby, Jacob, Brenna, Jordan, and 28 great grandchildren. She will be missed by her brothers and sisters and friends.

Mom and Dad came to Canada from Holland as newlyweds in February 1952. They started their married life in St Thomas, where dad had 2 brothers. They started their family there and after almost 10 years, decided they wanted to have a business of their own. In December of 1961, they purchased a greenhouse operation in Welland and that was the beginning of Vermeer’s Greenhouses. Mom and Dad worked so hard to make ends meet. And we had everything we needed! Mom and Dad loved us so deeply, encouraged us to do what we loved, raised us all with all with a deep love for God and His church.

This last year was so difficult for Mom since she was not able to do the things she loved. Simple things like walking through the greenhouses, planting or taking cuttings, cross stitch, offering hospitality to people who would drop in, or visiting friends. She asked us kids so often, why is it taking so long for me to go home to heaven? We don’t know the answer to that, but we did see the lives that were touched in her final weeks in the hospital! We will miss her deeply but we can rejoice in knowing that she is safe in Jesus’ arms!

Family and friends will be received at Grace Christian Reformed Church (660 South Pelham Road, Welland) on Thursday, May 30th from 2-4 & 6-8 pm. The celebration of Nell’s life will take place at the church on Friday, May 31st beginning at 10 am. Interment will occur prior to the service Friday morning with family only. As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to Open Arms Mission.

Sincere sympathies, condolences and peace to the whole Vermeer family and greater community that was so influenced by Mrs. Vermeer and the joy she has shared and spread over the years simply by sharing her amazing family, love of life and sincere service. I have been blessed to have known Mrs. Vermeer and I so respectfully got to call her "mom" Vermeer when she would visit for family events at BP. My fondest memory was my honour to bring a glass of rose wine that was to Mrs. Vermeer's liking that she could sip on during her visit with her amazing family. Love and Prayers with you all. Deb Zahra, Denis Bisson.
